De Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (em Up From Below, 2009)

Neo-hippie-indie-folk-alternativo… E o que mais se lhe quiser chamar. Independentemente do rótulo, Home, a 6ª faixa do segundo disco de originais da banda liderada por Alex Ebert, é, provavelmente, o ponto mais alto de tudo o que já fizeram (e que venham a fazer, também). Ebert é, também, o líder dos Ima Robot, banda nascida no início dos anos 2000 para surfar a onda sonora que recuperava alguns padrões sonoros típicos de outras épocas, no caso vertente, o punk rock e o dance rock, que são as veias mais marcadas deste projeto californiano (mas onde se conseguem perceber influências synth pop e new wave).

Alex Ebert é apenas mais um a pisar, com convicção, territórios tão distintos. Norman Cook andava pelo universo indie-pop como baixista dos Housemartins e, quando abandonou a banda, e depois de várias experiências, assumiu o alter ego Fatboy Slim, tornando-se num dos expoentes da eletrónica dos anos 90.

De volta a Home, nem o cliché que faz o refrão – home is wherever I’m with you/Estou em casa em qualquer lugar onde esteja contigo – recuperado do imaginário dos anos 60, do desapego do mundo material, assim como muita da sonoridade e das letras deste agrupamento, estraga o tema. Pelo contrário, dá-lhe uma patine que o torna ainda mais especial.

Ima Robot: A outra face de Alex Ebert

Neo-hippie-indie-folk-alternative... Or whatever you can call them. Regardless of the musical label, Home, the 6th track on the second album by this band led by Alex Ebert, is probably the best we can find in everything they have ever done (and will do, too).

Ebert is also the leader of Ima Robot, a band born in the early 2000s to surf the wave of recovering some sound patterns typical of other times, in this case, punk rock and dance rock, the main influences in this Californian project (where we can identify other influences, like synth pop and new wave).
Alex Ebert is just another one that feel comfortable having a foot on one musical territory and the other on something completely different. Norman Cook, for example, went from Housemartins indie-pop bassist to become one of the main acts of 90s electronic, once he assumed the alter ego Fatboy Slim.
Back to Home, the cliché that makes the chorus - home is wherever I'm with you - retrieved from the 60’s imaginary (as all the songs made by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros do), plunders the song. On the contrary, it gives it a patine that makes Home even more special.
