How Beautiful You Are

De The Cure (em Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, 1987)

Aconteceu alegadamente em 1987, à 6ª faixa de Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, na canção How Beautiful You Are.

Robert Smith, singer, songwriter, lead guitarist and founder of The Cure is – so they say… - an avid reader from an early age. And his literary journey has not stopped as he became older. That said, it would be almost inevitable that his way would cross with Baudelaire’s ... It allegedly happened in 1987, at the 6th track of the album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, in the song How Beautiful You Are. The year may not be very accurate, but we can look at the 80s of last century as a reliable benchmark. The action took place in a street of Paris during a rainy stroll between promises of eternal love and an unexpected confrontation with poverty that someone did not want to see. In that moment, love became a sudden momentary hate. All as decribed in The Eyes of the Poor, included in the collection of poems Paris Spleen, published in 1869, two years after the death of the author, Charles Baudelaire. Smith's conclusion - «nobody ever knows or loves another» - goes beyond the original ending of the poem, but it was an inevitable transgression to conquer the perfect end to a song haunted by that neo-punk-gothic-depressive atmosphere that haunts other The Smiths songs and so many other bands of that era.

Home

De Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (em Up From Below, 2009)

Neo-hippie-indie-folk-alternativo…

Neo-hippie-indie-folk-alternative... Or whatever you can call them. Regardless of the musical label,
Home, the 6th track on the second album by this band led by Alex Ebert, is probably the best we can find in everything they have ever done (and will do, too).
Ebert is also the leader of Ima Robot, a band born in the early 2000s to surf the wave of recovering some sound patterns typical of other times, in this case, punk rock and dance rock, the main influences in this Californian project (where we can identify other influences, like synth pop and new wave).
Alex Ebert is just another one that feel comfortable having a foot on one musical territory and the other on something completely different. Norman Cook, for example, went from Housemartins indie-pop bassist to become one of the main acts of 90s electronic, once he assumed the alter ego Fatboy Slim.
Back to Home, the cliché that makes the chorus - home is wherever I'm with you - retrieved from the 60’s imaginary (as all the songs made by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros do), plunders the song. On the contrary, it gives it a patine that makes Home even more special.
