Home

De Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (em Up From Below, 2009)

Neo-hippie-indie-folk-alternativo…

Neo-hippie-indie-folk-alternative... Or whatever you can call them. Regardless of the musical label,
Home, the 6th track on the second album by this band led by Alex Ebert, is probably the best we can find in everything they have ever done (and will do, too).
Ebert is also the leader of Ima Robot, a band born in the early 2000s to surf the wave of recovering some sound patterns typical of other times, in this case, punk rock and dance rock, the main influences in this Californian project (where we can identify other influences, like synth pop and new wave).
Alex Ebert is just another one that feel comfortable having a foot on one musical territory and the other on something completely different. Norman Cook, for example, went from Housemartins indie-pop bassist to become one of the main acts of 90s electronic, once he assumed the alter ego Fatboy Slim.
Back to Home, the cliché that makes the chorus - home is wherever I'm with you - retrieved from the 60’s imaginary (as all the songs made by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros do), plunders the song. On the contrary, it gives it a patine that makes Home even more special.

Unfinished Sympathy

De Massive Attack (em Blue Lines, 1991)

Trip quê?! Hop!

Trip what?! Hop! That's right: trip-hop, a genre that Massive Attack created. It’s origins are in England (Bristol if we want to be more precise) and this music style can be described as soft electronic (downtempo), with soul, reggae and jazz influences (and many others, like some of hip-hop’s formulas too). Precursors of this fertile musical lineage, Robert «3D» Del Naja and Grant «Daddy Marshall, the two founding members of the band, tend call other artist to collaborate with them. They do so since de beginning. Horace Andy, big name in the scene reggae, was one of them. The singer Shara Nelson was chosen to give voice to Unfinished Sympathy, the 6th track and the 2nd single to be taken from the debut album. This song is considered to be the genesis of trip-hop. Thi brilliant song found it’s perfect match in the video made for it. One continuous shot - yes, without any cuts - filmed on the streets of Los Angeles in which the camera follows Nelson as she walks for several minutes - 5:21 to watch without blinking. The game was on.

Vazulina

A.C.

P.S.

We met Maria de Lurdes Pina Assunção (aka Lura) performing in Cesária Évora shows (at Expo'98, for instance) and immediately she got the unfair cognomen: «The new Cesária». Unfair to Lura. These ‘succesion’ things mean a heavy burden that does not mix well with the lightness of Lura. When she dances with that movement in her arms, as if she’s about to fly, Cesária is the last person we think of. Cesária is huge, but she’s another thing. Don’t bother to force comparisons. Lura’s worth is herself. Di Korpu Ku Alma was definitely the album that launched the career of this Lisbon native, with Cape Verdean provenance (her mother is from the island of São Nicolau and her father is from Santiago). Lura sings Vazulina, the sixth track, in Santiago creoule. The song has a delightful rhythm, to dance as the Cape Verdean ‘batuqueiras’ do. It makes you want to catch a plane and go to Praia city, to see these girls that Lura talks about. The ones that had straighten their hair 'ku penti di ferro kenti» and «Ku vazulina».
A.C.

P.S.
The two most famous themes that Lura sings, Vazulina and Na Ri Na, were composed by Orlando Pantera, great name of the new generation of Cape Verdean music, who died prematurely in 2001, at age 33.

Journey

«Who am I? What was I born to live? Figuring out if I really belong in this world...».
«Will I succeed or will I fall short of my dreams?»
«I know I've gotta find a way to move on/Gotta move on to a place where I can be stronger». Esse lugar existe. Chama-se Terra do Nunca.

Nitin Sawhney was 41 years old when he recorded Philtre. Yes, it’s the album of Dead Man (track 3), the radio stations favorite at the time. But track 6, Journey, was the one which left me amazed.
First surprise: how come a man with his age wrote such a teen lyrics? «Who am I? What was I born to live? Figuring out if I really belong in this world ... ». These were the questions I asked at 16, locked in the bedroom listening to Joy Division, wide awake at dawn, trying to figure out how to inhale the smoke of a cigarette. Alexander the Great conquered Persia at age 23. Some of us are still asking who they are at 40.
Second surprise: how come a woman with my age can relate to Journey lyrics? Is not a nostalgic connection of someone who recalls the past; those lyrics came to disturb my present. «Will I succeed or will I fall short of my dreams?».  With the world collapsing, it does not make sense to walk through the wreckages searching for a meaning. But we walk. Eternal Peter Pan, unfortunate even in the age we are stuck: not the childhood, but the adolescence. Is it really a bad luck?
I like to listen to Journey in a day like this – it’s almost, almost raining. The sky gets angry and Vikter Duplaix voice (a musician, singer and DJ from Philadelphia, who made the passage from church choirs to electronic music) gives us comfort. «I know I've gotta find a way to move on / Gotta move on to a place where I can be stronger.»  This place exists. It's called Neverland.

Sonic Armada

E, afinal, quem chegou primeiro à lua? Meliès ou Armstrong?
P.D.A.

When the journey comes to an end - we are talking about the album Le Voyage dans la Lune, where Air pay homage to George Méliès giving a new soundtrack to his famous 1902 silent film - the melodic line that keeps playing in our heads, in an addictive loop, is the one we hear in Sonic Armada.
There is an atmosphere of psychedelic funk in this track, the most energetic moment of the album, that make us go back to the colors of the last century 70s, or even earlier, to the psychedelia of the first albums of Pink Floyd, marked by the tormented genius of Syd Barrett. Shortly after this project of the french duo have been announced, a part of Sonic Armada was, by choice of the musicians, one of the first excerpts to be revealed. Accompanying it, some truly magical scenes of this movie, Le Voyage dans la Lune, in which Méliès, with the most rudimentary techniques of special effects in cinema, showed us an expressive moon, visited by humans. It was known that Méliès had colored by hand, a copy of his film, but everybody considered that this bizarre treasure was lost forever. Until... it appeared, badly damaged, in Barcelona, in 1993. With the help of the most modern digital technologies, a complex restoration work started some years later. This new version of the movie premiered at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, in 2011. Accompanying it, we could hear Air’s music. Somehow, they also colored, again, this historic piece of cinema. There are trips that never end.
And, after all, who arrived first on the moon? Méliès or Armstrong?
