De Nitin Sawhney (em Philtre, 2005)
Nitin Sawhney tinha 41 anos quando gravou Philtre. Sim, é o álbum
de Dead Man (a faixa 3), a preferida
das rádios na época. Mas foi a faixa 6, Journey, que me deixou
espantada.
Primeira perplexidade: porque razão um homem daquela idade escreve
uma letra tão adolescente? «Who am I? What was I born to live? Figuring out if
I really belong in this world...». Estas eram as perguntas que eu fazia aos 16
anos, fechada no quarto a ouvir Joy Division, acordada madrugada dentro a
tentar descobrir como travar o fumo de um cigarro. Alexandre o Grande
conquistou a Pérsia aos 23 anos. Alguns de nós andam aqui hoje a perguntar quem
são aos 40.
Segunda perplexidade: porque razão uma mulher da minha idade se
identifica tanto com a letra de Journey? Não é uma identificação saudosa de
quem recorda passados; a letra veio incomodar o meu presente. «Will I succeed
or will I fall short of my dreams?» Com o mundo a desabar, não sei se fará
muito sentido andar no meio dos escombros à procura de um sentido. Mas andamos.
Eternos Peter Pan. Azarados até na idade em que ficámos presos: não a infância,
mas a adolescência. Será mesmo azar?
Journey apetece ouvir num dia como este em que escrevo - está
quase, quase a chover. O céu zanga-se e a voz de Vikter Duplaix (um músico,
cantor e DJ de Filadélfia, que fez o percurso dos coros das igrejas para a
eletrónica) dá-nos consolo. «I know I've gotta find a way to move on/Gotta move
on to a place where I can be stronger». Esse lugar existe. Chama-se Terra do
Nunca.

Nitin Sawhney was 41 years old when he recorded Philtre. Yes, it’s the album of Dead Man (track 3), the radio stations favorite at the time. But track 6, Journey, was the one which left me amazed.
First surprise: how come a
man with his age wrote such a teen lyrics? «Who am I? What was I born to live?
Figuring out if I really belong in this world ... ». These were the questions I
asked at 16, locked in the bedroom listening to Joy Division, wide awake at
dawn, trying to figure out how to inhale the smoke of a cigarette.
Alexander the Great conquered Persia at age 23. Some of us are still asking who
they are at 40.
Second surprise: how come a
woman with my age can relate to Journey lyrics? Is not a nostalgic connection
of someone who recalls the past; those lyrics came to disturb my present. «Will
I succeed or will I fall short of my dreams?». With the world collapsing,
it does not make sense to walk through the wreckages searching for a meaning.
But we walk. Eternal Peter Pan, unfortunate even in the age we are stuck: not
the childhood, but the adolescence. Is it really a bad luck?
I like to listen to Journey
in a day like this – it’s almost, almost raining. The sky gets angry and Vikter
Duplaix voice (a musician, singer and DJ from Philadelphia, who made the
passage from church choirs to electronic music) gives us comfort. «I know I've
gotta find a way to move on / Gotta move on to a place where I can be
stronger.» This place exists. It's called Neverland.
