De Bruce Springsteen (em The Promise, 2010)

Era uma canção de amor inacabada e Bruce julgava não ter ainda a coragem para a interpretar. Motivação não faltava a Patti Smith, apaixonadíssima por Fred Smith, dos Sonic Youth, com quem viria a casar em 1980. Naquele momento, o generoso Springsteen fez o que tinha que fazer e entregou-lhe Because the Night. Para ela, que estava no estúdio ao lado também a gravar, a canção fazia todo o sentido. E isso percebe-se pela forma como a arrebatou e lhe deu a intensidade que Bruce julgava não conseguir dar. Acresce que, confessaria Smith mais tarde, faltava-lhe um single para Easter, o seu terceiro disco. Ele aí estava, servido de bandeja.

Because the Night nasceu durante as sessões de Darkness on the Edge of Town, o quarto LP de Springsteen, editado em 1978. De fora do disco, mas presença constante nas suas atuações ao vivo - como a do último Rock in Rio Lisboa -, o tema acabaria por ser editado no triplo LP Live in Concert 1975-85 e, mais recentemente, em The Promise (2010), que recupera as canções que ficaram de fora do longa duração de 1978. É, pois, a 6ª faixa deste disco, todo ele um lado B, todo ele um potencial lado A.

A versão de Smith ficará sempre como a mais conhecida/reconhecida, mas Bruce continua a insistir em puxá-la para o seu território, sempre que pode. Passados tantos anos, terá chegado a hora de reclamar o que é seu?

Because the Night foi sendo recuperada por diversas bandas, em várias versões - umas mais felizes que outras, claro -, sendo que aquela que fez renascer o tema, mais recentemente, aconteceu na atuação dos 10 000 Maniacs na sessão MTV Unplugged, em 1993.

Nothing compares 2 U é outro tema de um autor masculino – Prince - arrebatado por uma intérprete feminina – Sinéad O’Connor.

It was an unfinished love song and Bruce still believed he hadn’t the courage to sing it properly. Patti Smith, who was in love by Fred Smith, of Sonic Youth – the couple got married in 1980 – had every reason plus one to grab that song. At that time, the generous Springsteen did what he had to do and gave her Because the Night. For Patti Smith, which was in the studio next to Bruce’s recording, the song was a perfect match for her state of mind. We can see that by the way she snatched the song and gave it the intensity that Bruce thought he was unable to give. Smith confessed later she lacked a single for Easter, her third album. It was there, served on a plate.
Because the Night was born during the sessions of Darkness on the Edge of Town, Springsteen's fourth LP, released in 1978. Left out of the record, but being a constant presence in his live performances - like the last Rock in Rio Lisboa - the theme would eventually be edited in the triple LP Live in Concert 1975-85 and, more recently, in The Promise, which brings back to light the songs that were left out of the 1978 LP. It is the 6th track on this disc, all of it a B Side, all of it a potential A Side.
Patti Smith's version will always be the most known/recognized, but Bruce still insists on pulling it into its territory, whenever he can. After so many years, is it time to claim the old creation?

Because the Night has been covered by several bands, - some did better than others, of course - and the one who gave new live to the song more recently was the 10 000 Maniacs’ performance on the MTV Unplugged session in 1993.
